This blog post discusses the BioMat and sleep. Before we discuss bio-mats, we want to mention several interesting things about sleep:

  • Our bodies have to have sleep to function optimally.
    • Research reports more than half of adults worldwide do not get enough sleep. (Isn’t that interesting?!)
    • Our bodies need sleep to re-charge and feel rejuvenated for the next day.
    • Further, not enough sleep can contribute to a number of health issues (such as obesity, kidney and heart disease, strokes, diabetes, as well as other physical/cognitive/hormonal issues).

We use the acronym of brain waves G B A T D, which is another important thing to know about sleep. It stands for Gamma, Beta, Alpha, Theta and Delta, and is the human brain waves, moving from fast brain activity (Gamma) to the slow, sleep stages (Delta). This chart depicts the stages of stress reduction/relaxation:

So where does the BioMat fit in? You may be feeling Gamma (quick brain activity) when you lay down on the BioMat. And as you lay longer and longer, you move through the five brain wave stages:

  • Gamma waves are the fastest brain waves. These waves pass information quickly and they play a key role in our consciousness, as well as our ability to focus.
  • Beta brain waves happen when we are awake and alert. They are predominate when we are doing thinking tasks. They are fast waves and are engaged when we concentrate.
  • Relaxation is all about alpha brain waves … so is being in a calm state. Alpha brain waves occur when our brain is resting, in quiet thought. As you can see in the graphic, the brain waves are slowing.
  • Theta brain waves are the meditative state and there is a theta stage of sleep. This stage is also when we process great information or imagery. Theta brain waves connect us to our intuition, and both long-term and short-term memories.
  • Finally, delta brain waves are the slowest. We suspend any external awareness and associate these waves with our deepest sleep stages. Delta waves regulate our autonomic bodily functions.

In other words, the BioMat can definitely help reach the latter two stages – Theta and Delta – which is the most restorative. The BioMat can help your overall sleep hygiene and health.
